Portraits is a painting series inspired by my intimate observations of people close to me, created from a combination of live sittings and photographic references. The figures hold composed poses that reference the long history of portrait painting, yet the fluid, atmospheric interior and exterior spaces—rather than concrete sitter and setting—reveal the emotional experience and vulnerability of both the subject and myself, the exchange between us, and an emphasis on empathy and psychological complexity.
